Hello,
I'd like to share my story, my name is Maria Mayo
and I was born and raised in Oxnard, CA. My father came to the U.S in his
twenties to work in agricultural fields. He chose Oxnard because the amount of
opportunities, if you eat salad and vegetables we must be connected somehow
because Oxnard produces many of the vegetables crops for the nation grocery
stores lol ok moving on I love my hometown because every day when I drive by the
fields I'm reminded what brought me here and how hard working my community is. I
am the youngest of three children and our family is all over the U.S. and
Mexico.
At a very young age I loved the entertainment industry I watched
"Sabado Gigante" it's like Latin version of "the Price is Right" lol and I
imagined myself on TV. I would do the cat walk in my living room for my family
as we watched the show. When I heard the laughter of my brother and sister I
began to doubt that a pudgy brown little girl can accomplish such a thing. My favorite shows were in the 80’s and
all you ever saw was blue eyed blonde hair beauties, until of course Oprah came
along. I love Oprah!
Im not going to sit and declare myself the next Latina Oprah lol but I do
have a quest to help the voices of the unprivileged, disadvantaged, youth, and
women to be told. Most
importantly, my goal is to create a higher level of understanding and connection
between cultures and age groups through my work in the Media.
I remember my father coming home from work in the fields, really
late, tired and covered with mud. He always told me to study hard and I can
accomplish anything I wanted that an education would take me to high places and
that's what he came to U.S for.
My dad would leave for periods of 6 months at a time for work,
leaving my mother Caring for us all. She is an amazing woman, I remember her
taking me and my sister to dance lessons, ballet, sports, I don't know how this
woman found out all about these activities not knowing the language.
My dad’s words on the power of education stuck with me and in the Fall of
2002 I was admitted to USC. It was a challenging journey getting to college
because my parents couldn't give me any advice Or help me with questions. I had
to be the parent -child and figuring out housing, financial aid questions,
classes etc. But I was blessed with my parents financial help and
support.
While at USC I interned for the Nation’s Top TV Networks NBC, ABC, KCET,
LATV. After graduation I began working for a Spanish Broadcast Radio company.
Three years ago, after working I went through a life altering program that
really brought into perspective my passion in life, my dreams, and the impact I
want to have in my lifetime.
I got clear that I couldn't live life not doing
or trying what I love which is reporting, being with people and allowing their
self- expression, voice and story to be told.
I came back and with the help of Andres Orozco at Oxnard
college, I began to host OCTV on the community channel. I started reporting on
weekends and weekdays covering local events, LA events, film festivals you name
it all for free. I do these events giving up my weekends, get home at 1-2 AM,
work a 40 hour workday and I love it so much that I would do it all over
again. I became more and more
confident on camera and learned that I could master whatever is I wanted with
more practice. I study on weekends
Broadcast Journalism at UCLA.
I submitted an audition tape for
Fox Deportes (Fox
Sports) on April 2012 I did with my iphone, a
few weeks later I receive a call I was one of the Top 10 National finalists but
now it is in the hands of you, the public- to launch my career with a notable
network.
I am committed to empower youth, young women, single moms, minority
groups that ANYTHING is possible with my story.
I help youth that are first
generation college students facilitate their road to college.
Please vote
